Ordinary union fees are tax deductible. The full amount of your membership fee is tax deductible.
The membership fee for pensioners is not tax deductible.
NITO reports trade union fees directly to the tax authorities on your behalf if you are registered with your personal identity number.
Discount for newly qualified members
NITO's student members are automatically entitled to three years' discount following their graduation year:
- Free membership in the graduation year
- First year: 75 % discount
- Second year: 50 % discount
- Third year: 25 % discount

Partner discount for married/cohabiting members
NITO offers a partner discount of 25 % for married and cohabiting NITO members.
Both must be economically active members and registered at the same address in the National Population Register.

Additional deal for biomedical laboratory scientists
Membership of the Institute of Biomedical Science (BFI) is obligatory for authorised biomedical laboratory scientists who work in medical laboratories and apply for NITO membership. They pay an additional fee that offers special membership benefits not offered by other trade unions, including:
- Bioingeniøren magazine delivered to their home address
- specialist approval on application
- support for further education and research from the Study Fund
- specially courses for biomedical laboratory scientists
- opportunities to join professional networks
NITO members without authorisation as biomedical laboratory scientists but who work in the same field as biomedical laboratory scientists or who work primarily in training biomedical laboratory scientists may be granted membership on application. Student members in NITO are also entitled to student membership in the Institute of Biomedical Science.

PhD research fellows
As a PhD research fellow you pay only 25 % of the membership fee while undertaking your degree.
If you previously had student membership, you will also be entitled to the following tiered discount rates:
- First year: 75 % discount on 25 % membership fee
- Second year: 50 % discount on 25 % membership fee
- Third year: 25 % discount on 25 % membership fee

Reduced/part-time positions
If you work part-time, you are entitled to a reduced membership fee:
- 1 %–50 % of a full-time position = 50 % membership fee
- 51 %–75 % of a full-time position = 75 % membership fee
- 76 %–100 % of a full-time position = 100 % membership fee
Membership while living abroad
Moving abroad for a while? We adapt your membership fee while you are abroad for work, study, travel or other reasons.
- If you live abroad and are employed by a foreign company, you are entitled to a 50 % discount on your membership fee.
- If you live abroad and are paid by a Norwegian employer, you must pay the full membership fee.
- If you are going to have period without or with significantly reduced salary, we will find an arrangement that works for you.

Nordic guest membership
If you are a member of one of our sister organisations in the Nordic region, you can apply for guest membership in NITO during your stay in Norway.
You pay your membership fee to your organisation and get free membership in NITO.
Apply for guest membership through the organisation to which you already belong. Nordic guest membership is granted for one year at a time.
NITO members may apply to our sister organisations in the Nordic region for a similar type of membership.

Dual membership in the Norwegian Association of Researchers
NITO members who are employed by universities, university colleges and research institutes may also apply for membership in the Norwegian Association of Researchers.

Further education membership NOK 350 (for the entire study period). If you take further education alongside your job, you are entitled to a reduced membership fee.
Pensioners
Pensioner membership costs NOK 534 per year.
Pensioners pay only 10 % of the fee payable by economically active members, which in 2022 is NOK 534.
Members aged over 62 who are not economically active are entitled to pensioner membership.
Pensioner members aged over 82 pay no membership fee.

Disability benefit recipients
Disability benefit recipients NOK 534 per year.
Persons with a disability aged under 62 who are not economically active may apply for membership as disability benefit recipients.

Exemptions from the membership fee
Exemptions from paying the membership fee apply in certain circumstances:
Unemplyed or laid off
If you are a jobseeker or have been laid off. Members who become unemployed or are laid off more than 50 % are exempt from paying the membership fee.
Exemption from the membership fee for members who are unemployed or laid off is granted for one quarter (i.e. three months) at a time.
Before each new quarter, you will receive a text message or email from NITO requesting an update on your employment situation and potential further exemption from paying your membership fee.
Partially laid off
If you work between 51 % and 75 % of a full-time position, you are entitled to a reduction in the membership fee.
- 50 % of a full-time position = 50 % membership fee
- 51 %–75 % of a full-time position = 75 % membership fee
- 76 %–100 % of a full-time position = 100 % membership fee

Recipients of work assessment allowance
Members who are granted 100 % work assessment allowance (arbeidsavklaringspenger (AAP)) by NAV are exempt from paying the membership fee. Members receiving work assessment allowance and who work part-time must pay the same membership fee as economically active members holding part-time positions (see the section entitled Reduced/part-time positions).

If the decision to grant a work assessment allowance is extended, you must notify us accordingly by resubmitting the form. You will receive a new invoice from us once the period covering the decision expires.

Recipients of paid parental leave and care leave
Members receiving unpaid parental leave or care leave may apply for exemption from paying the membership fee. Submit your application along with confirmation from your employer to .

Members serving compulsory military service are entitled to exemption from paying the membership fee. Submit your application along with documentation of your daily allowance to .
